An Ongoing Experiment in Digital Art and Collective Creativity
Since its foundation in 1999, YD-LABS has served as a living experiment in digital art and collective creativity. Conceived by designer Louis Paschoud and developer Peter Holberton, the lab was built around a simple but daring idea: that creative potential flourishes under limitation. By offering pared-down tools and minimal interfaces, YD-LABS invites participants to explore expression in its most direct and unfiltered form.
Over the past two decades, the project has evolved through countless collaborations, installations, and online initiatives—each one reinterpreting the relationship between technology, art, and human imagination. What remains constant is the belief that simplicity can be a powerful catalyst for discovery.
At the heart of YD-LABS’ early experimentation was YouDraw, one of the internet’s first browser-based drawing platforms. It launched with only the bare essentials: a white canvas, two black pens (one thick, one thin), and two erasers. That was it. No layers, no filters, no undo button—just a direct line between hand, mind, and screen.
For over twenty years, this tool remained unchanged, quietly accumulating a global community of contributors who found joy in its raw immediacy. Millions of drawings were created and shared, forming a collective experiment in visual spontaneity. What began as a simple online sketchpad ultimately became a massive digital archive—a fragmentary yet remarkable record of human creativity in its most open and uncurated form.
In 2022, YD-LABS unveiled 500K, an ambitious archival project designed to house and display the entire YouDraw collection—500,000 individual drawings produced over a quarter of a century.
The 500K Map transforms this vast repository into an interactive, navigable landscape. Each drawing is preserved as part of a fluid, interconnected web of expression, allowing users to explore how creativity evolves through constraint and repetition. It is both a map and a memory—an ever-expanding mosaic of spontaneous digital art that bridges generations of creators.
500K stands as a testament to what can emerge when artistic freedom meets structural limitation. It captures the evolution of a medium and a moment in internet culture when creation was as simple as picking up a virtual pen and beginning to draw.
