Every Noise at Once
Every Noise at Once is a unique music discovery website created by Glenn McDonald, a former Spotify employee. It visually maps thousands of Spotify musical genres in an interactive scatter plot where genres are organized based on sonic characteristics—“mechanical and electronic” sounds appear at the top, while more “organic” acoustic sounds are at the bottom; atmospheric music is on the left, and spiky, bouncy music on the right. Visitors to the site can explore over 6,000 genres, listen to 30-second samples, and dive deeper to discover related artists and playlists, offering a fresh way to uncover niche and global music styles often hidden from mainstream platforms.
Originally developed as part of McDonald’s work at The Echo Nest (acquired by Spotify), Every Noise at Once showcases the vast diversity and complexity of musical genres worldwide, from Viking metal to German show tunes to deep filthstep. Despite its popularity, the site has not been updated since late 2023 due to McDonald’s departure from Spotify. Still, it remains a powerful tool for music enthusiasts seeking to explore beyond the usual playlists. Its algorithmic approach encourages users to examine unfamiliar sounds and cross-cultural boundaries, fostering appreciation of the rich tapestry of global music.
