A New Model for Creative Prosperity: Understanding the Artist Corporation (A-Corp)

The Artist Corporation, or A-Corp, is a new concept introduced by Yancey Strickler, cofounder of Kickstarter, in a recent TED talk. The idea is designed to address the challenges creative people face in making a sustainable living from their work. Strickler points out that traditional business structures like LLCs, S-Corps, or nonprofits don't really fit the way artists and creators work together. The A-Corp is a radical new model that aims to change that by putting artists at the center of their own economic futures.

At its core, the Artist Corporation is about collective ownership. Instead of artists working alone or competing for limited resources, an A-Corp allows them to pool their resources, share profits, and jointly own their creative output. This means that the brand, intellectual property, revenue, and even equipment can be held by the collective, not just by individuals. If the collective succeeds, everyone involved benefits, not just a single owner or outside investor.

This model also opens the door to new possibilities for artists. For example, an A-Corp can pay salaries, license creative work, issue shares, and even attract investment just like a traditional business. But unlike most companies, the focus is on supporting creative work and ensuring that artists have a stake in the long-term value of what they create. Strickler envisions a future where the next Disney or major creative powerhouse could be an artist-owned collective, rather than a giant corporation.

One of the most important aspects of the A-Corp is that it treats artists as real economic actors, giving them the tools and structures they need to build wealth, access benefits, and support each other. This is a big shift from the hustle culture that dominates much of the creative world today, where artists are often forced to work multiple jobs and constantly compete for limited opportunities.

The Artist Corporation is still a new idea, but it's already sparking conversations about how to build a more sustainable and equitable future for creative people. It's a vision of the arts where collaboration, shared success, and economic security are possible for everyone involved.
