Elizabeth Darrow
Elizabeth Darrow is a distinguished Wilmington, NC, painter and collagist whose process-driven work embodies the spirit of Abstract Expressionism.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1945 and a Wilmington resident since 1977, Darrow graduated from Oberlin College in 1967 with a focus on painting. She describes her creative journey: “For me, becoming engaged in, and carried along by the process, is what making art is all about. My paintings, as well as collages, emerge from the process itself, rather than from any preconceived plan of mine. My only ‘plan’ when embarking on a canvas is to layer colorful, gestural strokes of paint. My task then is to impose order to this initial chaos. The process moves itself along, taking unexpected turns as various shapes and colors are added to the equation. Out of a succession of layers an image emerges. In the tradition of Abstract Expressionism, discovery comes through the process itself.”
Darrow’s signature style layers oil paint and cut-paper collage intuitively, blending abstract energy with figurative narratives featuring playful characters, animals, and patterns. Her intuitive method—starting with eyes or chaotic strokes and letting images “hatch”—produces works infused with humor, angst, and improvisation, held in collections like Cameron Art Museum and Duke University Medical Center.
A fixture at galleries like Art in Bloom and occasional pop-up shows, she has presented solo exhibits such as “Asylum: Collages” alongside abstract and figurative series, with features in Fourth Friday events and documentaries like “Elizabeth Darrow: Believing in the Process.”
